W.J. Beal Botanical Garden

Location: Okemos, MI 48864, USA

William James Beal was based at Michigan State Agricultural College, as MSU was then known, from 1871 to 1910. He was the founder of this, the oldest continuously operated botanical garden in the United States. He was also a pioneer in the development of hybrid corn. In1879 he began one of the most enduring experiments in botany, filling 20 bottles with a mix of sand and seeds, then burying them, with the aim of planting the seeds at fixed intervals to assess their longevity. The experiment is still running, and will go to 2100.

This garden contains over 2000 different types of plants. Staff of the Beal Botanical Garden are also responsible for documentation and study of the many trees, including elms, on the MSU campus.
