Eli & Edythe Broad Art Museum

Location: East Lansing, MI, USA

History: The new Broad Art Museum was designed by world renowned architect Zaha Hadid. The design of the museum was a world-wide competition, with 10 semi-finalists, from the 10, five architectural firms were selected to be in the final competition, presenting their proposal to the board and Mr. Eli Broad, himself. When completed, collection growth and new acquisitions will focus on modern and contemporary works, post 1945.

Architecture: Zaha Hadid designed the building based on the romantic, 19th century Beaux Arts ideal of sky lighted galleries. The east facade of extended windows create a continuous skylight to shine into the galleries, exposing their natural character. The building was designed with sustainability in mind and the massive windows act as solar control as well as natural light. The more than 18,000 square feet of gallery space will include areas of: special exhibitions, modern and contemporary art, new media, photography and works on paper. The new museum also includes an expansive outdoor sculpture garden to its east.

Fun Fact: Zaha Hadid was the first woman to win the Pritzker Prize for Architecture.
